Laser engraving the Sugared Sprig sign board

A custom branded sign board for The Sugared Sprig — laser engraved logo on a butcher block panel, filled and finished by hand.

Laser Engraving

The logo goes on with a diode laser engraver. The machine traces the design directly into the wood, burning the lines into the surface. No stencils, no transfers — the laser does the work.

The burn comes out clean — crisp lettering, the flower detail, and the decorative arc all in one pass.

Sanding and Finishing

After the engraving, the board gets sanded smooth around the burned lines. The orbital sander cleans up any char residue without touching the engraved detail.

Then a coat of Minwax paste finishing wax goes on to seal the wood and bring out the natural color of the butcher block.

The Result

The contrast between the burned logo and the finished wood makes the design stand out without paint or stain. The engraved lines sit below the surface, so the logo is permanent — it won't wear off or peel.

Custom sign boards like this are a good use case for the laser: one-off branded pieces that would cost a fortune to have CNC'd or hand-carved.
